XIARHOS WINS THE RACE FOR STATE REPRESENTATIVE
IN THE FIFTH BARNSTABLE DISTRICT

November 3, 2020

SANDWICH – Steve Xiarhos, Republican candidate for State Representative in the Fifth Barnstable District, declared victory in his campaign late on Tuesday evening.
According to preliminary results reported by Town Clerks in Sandwich, Bourne, Barnstable, and Plymouth, Xiarhos appeared to win election by a margin of 13,384 to 12,137. His opponent, James Dever of Sandwich, called Xiarhos Tuesday evening to concede.
“I am honored and humbled by the results of today’s election,” said Xiarhos. “I appreciate the support of so many voters, and I am ready to serve the people of the Fifth Barnstable District as their next State Representative. Above all else, I pledge to represent our four communities with honor, integrity, accountability, and hard work.”
As a former Deputy Police Chief and Cape Cod philanthropist, Xiarhos ran a campaign focused on public safety, fiscal responsibility, and local issues. He has vowed to strengthen the state’s criminal justice laws to make sure violent criminals and drug dealers remain in jail, and to support first responders and veterans. He also has pledged to advocate for more Local Aid for cities and towns, to find ways to balance the state budget without new taxes, and to vote against wasteful state spending.
Xiarhos’ campaign was endorsed by a wide range of officials on the state and local level, including Governor Charlie Baker and State Representative Randy Hunt. Hunt, who currently represents the Fifth Barnstable District, announced his intention not to run for reelection last year.
Xiarhos says he looks forward to the beginning of the legislative session in January and plans to get down to business quickly. “I’m not going to waste any time making sure the interests of the people of this district are fully represented in the House,” said Xiarhos. He has pledged frequent contact with the residents of the district and to make constituent service a priority. To assist with those efforts, Xiarhos has said he plans to open a district constituent services office sometime after taking office.

XIARHOS OUTLINES LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES TO SUPPORTERS

October 28, 2020

WEST BARNSTABLE – Steve Xiarhos, candidate for State Representative in the Fifth Barnstable District, recently spoke with supporters about some of his 2021 legislative priorities if he is elected.

“By far, the most important issue facing our state is to remain vigilant and continue our response to the Coronavirus pandemic,” said Xiarhos. “My top priority will be to ensure the public health and economic security of Cape Cod residents, while also balancing the state budget without new taxes and pushing to get schools and businesses back to a sense of normalcy as soon as possible.”

“At the same time, we must not lose sight of other important issues facing our state,” Xiarhos said.

According to Xiarhos, if elected, he would request to serve on the Joint Committees on Public Safety and Homeland Security, Education, and Transportation. “These committees best reflect my professional experience as a police officer and school resource officer, as well as my sense of the most pressing needs for the 5th Barnstable District,” said Xiarhos.

Xiarhos says he plans to emphasize public safety and criminal justice reform as part of his legislative priorities. “I want to use my professional experience to help constantly reexamine our laws to make sure we’re in the best position possible to put violent criminals and drug dealers behind bars and keep them there,” Xiarhos said. He also wants to continue the fight against opioid abuse, which continues to be a problem statewide, and pledged to work with Rep. Will Crocker to push for passage of Nero’s Bill. Xiarhos also reaffirmed his opposition to sanctuary cities / sanctuary states. And, he pledged to use his experience to push for passage of an appropriate police reform bill. “The drafts passed by the House and Senate earlier this year simply went too far,” Xiarhos said. “I support passage of reforms, including increased training for officers, but we need to make sure that whatever we do does not undercut public safety in the Commonwealth.”

As a former school resource officer, Xiarhos also pledged to focus on education issues. “Local Aid obviously plays a vital role in our ability to deliver a quality education to our children, and I will push for robust funding of municipal and Chapter 70 aid going forward,” said Xiarhos. Xiarhos also says he wants to make issues of school safety a priority, and that he wants to investigate ways to expand charter schools in Massachusetts.

Xiarhos says he plans to take an active role in planning for the replacement of the Cape Cod Canal bridges. “Rep. Hunt and others have provided a solid agreement for the replacement of this important infrastructure, and I look forward to seeing this project brought to fruition. I also want to look for ways to increase intermodal transportation opportunities across our district, particularly the expansion of railways and bike paths.”

Environmental protection issues also remain an important priority for Xiarhos. “Many Cape Cod cities and towns are facing issues with wastewater management. We need to find ways to address these issues successfully,” he said. “We also need to work on issues of coastal erosion to protect our seashore. Cape Cod is a beautiful place to live and work, and we need to do everything we can to preserve it for future generations.”

XIARHOS ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR LOCAL
CONSTITUENT SERVICES OFFICE

October 26, 2020

SANDWICH – Steven Xiarhos, candidate for State Representative, told residents of the Fifth Barnstable District today that he plans to open and maintain a local constituent services office within the district if he is elected.

“If elected, I will be a full-time State Representative, and I pledge to make constituent service a top priority,” said Xiarhos. “While I anticipate having lots of work to do at the State House in Boston, I also think it’s important to have a base of operations locally so I can better communicate with people whenever I’m here at home. This is where my focus will remain.”

“I want to make sure that I am always fully accessible and responsive to people’s needs whenever they have a question, or a concern, or something they’d like me to look into for them,” Xiarhos continued. “If people want to speak with me, I want them to feel like they can just drop by so we can chat. I will never lose sight of the fact that the people of Sandwich, Barnstable, Bourne, and Plymouth collectively are my boss and my one and only job is to serve them with honor, integrity, hard work, and results.”

Xiarhos has made local issues a cornerstone of his campaign and has pledged to fight for more local aid and to reduce unfunded mandates on cities and towns. He also has maintained active lines of communication with local officials throughout his race for State Representative, a practice he looks forward to continuing if elected. “I want to know what local leaders are thinking and how I can help them and the community they serve,” he said. “Whenever there is a local project, or something that’s needed to support municipal services, or a problem that needs to be addressed, I want to be their first call so that we can come up with a solution together. Having a consistent working presence right here within the district is important in that regard.”

In recognition of his focus on local issues, Xiarhos has been endorsed by four members of the Sandwich Board of Selectmen (Michael Miller, Robert George, David Sampson and Charles Holden), in addition to Barnstable Town Councilor Matthew Levesque and Bourne Selectman Jared MacDonald. His attention to local small-business needs also was recognized by the National Federation of Independent Business MA-PAC, which is endorsing his candidacy. Recently, Xiarhos also announced the backing of local public safety groups, including the Sandwich Professional Fire Fighters Union (Local #2196), the Barnstable County Correctional Officers Union, and the Plymouth Police Superior Officers Association (MCOP Local # 372).

“This is my home, and making Cape Cod a better place to live, work, and raise a family is why I’m running for office,” said Xiarhos. “Having a local office will help me accomplish that goal. I can’t wait to get to work.”

Good morning,

Last night, our campaign scored a major victory in the race for State Representative here in the 5th Barnstable District.

I want to start today on the right note by thanking you for your constant support of my candidacy and by pledging to serve as a State Representative you will be proud of.

Over the past year, we’ve been through a lot together. Running for elected office for the first time is never easy. Running for office during a pandemic and in such a tumultuous overall political environment made it even more challenging.

And yet, no matter where I turned or what life decided to throw our way, you were always there for me. Whenever we needed sign holders, or financial contributions, or just a simple “like” of a post on social media, I could always depend on you for help. Your assistance and support means more than you can possibly imagine to Denise and me both. We share last night’s victory collectively.

So, too, do we share a stake in our future. We face many challenges ahead. That’s what this race was always all about.

Following our successful result, I want you to know that I will work hard on your behalf as this district’s next State Representative. I will dedicate every day to making life here in our district better for you. I will serve you with honor, integrity, and dedication. I will make your priorities my focus. When you speak, I’ll listen. When you need help, I’ll be there. And when you need a strong and sturdy voice, I’ll be it.

Most importantly, I will do my best to serve everyone in our district, with compassion and respect for all who live here and call this beautiful district “home.”

I’m sure I will have a lot more to say at some future point, but for now, I’ll leave it with this: THANK YOU for everything you did to make last night’s election result possible. I can’t wait for the honor and privilege of serving as your next State Representative.

Sincerely,
Steve
