Xiarhos Qualifies to Appear on Primary Ballot for 5th Barnstable District State Representative
April 8, 2020
BARNSTABLE – Steven Xiarhos is pleased to announce that he has qualified to appear on the ballot as a Republican candidate for State Representative in the Fifth Barnstable District this fall.
According to a preliminary review certified by the Massachusetts Secretary of State, Xiarhos submitted the official filings and more than the requisite number of signatures necessary to appear on the ballot at the state primary election on September 1.
“I am honored and humbled by the support I have received by residents of the Fifth Barnstable District so far, and I look forward to continuing my outreach to voters between now and the election,” said Xiarhos.
In announcing his candidacy this past February, Xiarhos cited several issues that are important to him. Stemming from his career in law enforcement, he stated a desire to continue work on public safety issues, including criminal justice reform to keep violent criminals and drug dealers off the streets. He also prioritized work on fighting opioid abuse, and opposing so-called “sanctuary cities.” He vowed to continue the work of his predecessors to be a strong fiscal conservative and to protect taxpayers. Xiarhos said he wants to work with colleagues to improve infrastructure, including the condition of the canal bridges, but that he also opposes raising the state’s gas tax and wants to keep the bridges toll-free. He further expressed interest in working to protect environmentally-sensitive areas on the Cape, but said he opposes having Massachusetts join the multi-state Transportation and Climate Initiative (TCI). He affirmed his commitment to protect constitutional rights, including those guaranteed by the First and Second Amendments. And, Xiarhos stated his desire to help protect the needs of students, seniors, first responders, and Veterans.
Xiarhos also has pledged to remain accountable and accessible to those he would represent. “Serving others through my work [has become] an important part of who I am, my values and what I believe in, and what motivates me in my life today,” he said.
Consistent with his desire to serve others, Xiarhos has been busy volunteering time to several local charities during the COVID-19 outbreak. He has spent a large amount of time helping to make sure that first responders have sufficient personal protective equipment to do their jobs, encouraging people to donate blood, and delivering food to needy students and veterans across Cape Cod.
“I believe in the importance of giving back to the community, and that is especially true during these challenging times,” Xiarhos said. “I intend to work hard in support of my candidacy for State Representative, but for now, this is not a time for ‘politics as usual’. There will be lots of time for campaigning later this year, and our committee is busy working behind-the-scenes and preparing for that when the time is right. For now, there are lots of people in our region who need assistance, and I am happy to do whatever I can to help them.”
