STATEMENT OF STEVEN XIARHOS ON REPLACEMENT OF CAPE COD CANAL BRIDGE INFRASTRUCTURE
July 7, 2020
BARNSTABLE — Steve Xiarhos, Republican candidate for State Representative in the Fifth Barnstable District, issued the following statement today in response to published reports that the US Army Corps of Engineers will replace the two existing Cape Cod Canal bridges:
“I applaud the news that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will replace the two Cape Cod Canal bridges at federal expense and hand over the newly-built bridges to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation in coming years. These projects (most of which are situated within the Fifth Barnstable District) will result in transportation infrastructure that is safer for Cape residents, more effective, and multi-modal. Also, these projects will be paid for mostly by the federal government, saving Massachusetts taxpayers money for construction costs and future maintenance expenses. In addition to thanking those who have brought plans for this project this far, I pledge to work with stakeholders to see this project brought to completion, and to make sure that these bridges remain toll-free for Massachusetts residents to use and enjoy into the future.”
