May 24, 2022

State Representative Steve Xiarhos (R – 5th Barnstable) is pleased to announce that he recently succeeded in obtaining initial passage of earmarks to fund local projects in an infrastructure bond bill passed by the House of Representatives.

The funding was included as part of House Bill 4807, a $5 billion package of funding for important infrastructure needs throughout the Commonwealth.

According to Xiarhos, the House approved funding of not less than $300,000 for the Sandwich department of public works for the re-engineering, redesign and replacement of the Route 130 and Quaker Meeting House Road intersection to enhance pedestrian safety. “This money is important as a matter of public safety for those who travel through this intersection on a regular basis, and particularly for pedestrian traffic,” said Xiarhos.

In addition, the House voter to approve not less than $75,000 for the purchase of a generator for the west Barnstable community center in the town of Barnstable. According to Xiarhos, purchase of a generator is important because the community center doubles as an emergency shelter for Barnstable residents during storms.

“I am pleased to be in a position to help the towns I represent by securing additional funding,” said Xiarhos. “This money is important to help fund local needs without putting additional burdens on property taxes in our towns.”

The bill passed the House unanimously by a vote of 155-0 on May 19. It is now pending before the State Senate for its consideration.
