Promoting Affordable Housing
One of my top responsibilities as your State Representative is to pursue ways to make Cape Cod a more affordable place to live, work, and raise a family. And, as always a key component of the cost of living is to promote the availability of affordable housing.
In 2024, I supported passage of The Affordable Homes Act, the largest housing bond bill ever filed in Massachusetts. This bill more than tripled the spending authorizations of the last housing bill passed in 2018, and together with related initiatives it is expected to support the production, preservation and rehabilitation of more than 65,000 homes statewide over the next five years. I believe this bill will help to lower the cost of housing for people on Cape Cod and also increase the availability of affordable housing alternatives. This is critical for our regional economy and way of life.
I also believe in giving back to the community. In late 2023 I was honored to be named to the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod. Now in its 35th year, Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod is an award-winning lead developer of energy-efficient, solar-equipped, affordable homes. Habitat Cape Cod has completed more than 180 homes for people in our area, with more projects already permitted. Habitat Cape Cod homes are deed-restricted to remain affordable in perpetuity. And what’s best is that the building process requires the active participation of the eventual owner of the home, giving them a true sense of pride and accomplishment with their home ownership.
