June 26, 2025

BOSTON, MA — State Representative Steven Xiarhos (R–Barnstable) proudly joined leaders from across Massachusetts today at the State House for the Commonwealth Heroines of 2025 ceremony, an annual celebration recognizing extraordinary women who make a profound difference in their communities through leadership, courage, and service.

Among this year’s honorees was Captain Kimberly Riker of the West Barnstable Fire Department, who was nominated by Representative Xiarhos for her exceptional contributions to public safety and community leadership. Captain Riker attended the event with her husband, Jacob—also a dedicated firefighter—marking a proud day for the fire service community and her town of Sandwich.

“Captain Riker exemplifies the highest ideals of public service,” said Representative Xiarhos. “With every call she answers and every challenge she faces, she leads with courage, integrity, and compassion. She brings an extraordinary blend of experience in emergency management, fire administration, and healthcare—and consistently places the well-being of others above all else.”

A respected leader in the fire service and throughout Cape Cod, Captain Riker has earned admiration for her strategic thinking, steady presence under pressure, and her commitment to mentoring and teamwork. Her recognition as a Commonwealth Heroine is a tribute not just to her professional excellence, but to a lifetime of quiet courage and selfless service.

“Today, we celebrate a true local hometown, hardworking hero,” Xiarhos added. “Captain Riker represents the very best of Sandwich, West Barnstable, Cape Cod, and of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We are so proud of her—and grateful for the example she sets for all of us.”

The Commonwealth Heroines program is presented annually by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women. Honorees are nominated by legislators from across the state to recognize women who do not make the news but make a difference.
