HORRIFIC: A Heartbreaking Tragedy in Minnesota

As a State Representative and former law enforcement officer, I am heartbroken and outraged by the horrific act of violence that took the lives of Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, and critically injured State Senator John Hoffman and his wife.

I strongly and emphatically condemn these acts of violence. What makes this tragedy even more disturbing is that the attacker reportedly impersonated a police officer to carry out the crimes. This is a disgraceful and cowardly act that undermines the trust and integrity of our law enforcement community—and it demands swift and unwavering justice.

My deepest prayers are with the families of Rep. Hortman and Sen. Hoffman, and with all of our colleagues in the Minnesota Legislature as they navigate this unimaginable loss. I also stand in full support of the dedicated law enforcement professionals who put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities with honor and integrity.

Impersonating an officer is not only a serious crime—it is a betrayal of public trust and a dangerous threat to public safety. We must remain vigilant and united. I encourage all public officials to increase their situational awareness and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.

We must come together—across the country, across parties, and across professions—to ensure the safety of our public servants and our citizens. Evil like this must never be tolerated.
