The Massachusetts General Court is made up of two separate legislative chambers: the Senate, and the House of Representatives. The House of Representatives is further divided into 160 districts, each of which represents about 40,000 people.
Following recent redistricting, the 5th Barnstable District spans several Cape Cod towns as follows:
- Barnstable (Precincts 10, 11, and 12 only)
- Bourne (Precincts 1, 2, 3, 5A, and 7 only)
- Sandwich
Randy Hunt represented the 5th Barnstable District on Beacon Hill from January 2011 until January 2021. Prior to that, Jeffrey Perry served as the 5th Barnstable District’s Representative for four terms.
The district includes the Sagamore Bridge and the easternmost portion of the Bourne Bridge, which serve as the only land-based points of entry to Cape Cod for automobiles across the Cape Cod Canal. The district is also ringed by miles of seashore along Massachusetts Bay and the tip of Buzzards Bay, making it home not only to pristine beaches and recreational areas, but also many environmentally-sensitive regions, conservation areas, and wildlife preserves. The district also includes Otis Air National Guard Base, Shawme Lake, the Sandwich Boardwalk (a nationally-recognized landmark), the Quaker Meetinghouse (the oldest in North America), the Sandwich Glass Museum, the Dexter Grist Mill (oldest on Cape Cod), the Hoxie House (oldest house on Cape Cod), as well as many other historic sites, recreational areas, and points of interest.
